JUSTICE McMORROW delivered the opinion of the court: Following a jury trial in the circuit court of Cook County, defendant, Eddie Williams, was convicted offirst degree murder
(Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 9-1(a)(1)), conspiracy to commit murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 8-2(a)), and
armed violence (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 33A-2). Following a separate sentencing hearing, the jury found defendant
eligible for the death penalty and found no mitigating circumstances sufficient to preclude its imposition. Accordingly, the
trial Judge sentenced defendant to death. That sentence has been stayed pending direct review by this court. Ill. Const. 1970,
art. VI, § 4(b); 134 Ill. 2d Rules 603(a), 609(a).
